MEET KEVIN HOWSON

Business Changes Lives.

Education

I completed my undergraduate degree at Yale University and earned an MBA from Duke University's Fuqua School of Business, specializing in Social Entrepreneurship and Leadership. I was named a Fuqua Scholar for graduating in the top 10 percent of my class with a 3.84 GPA.

The focus of my graduate studies  was on Impact Investing. Duke is arguably the best Impact Investing school in the world. During my time there I was fortunate to study under Professor Cathy Clark, one of the most respected experts on Impact Investing in the United States.

Career

I began my career with a $10 billion international private equity firm, Leucadia National Corporation (NYSE: LUK). Working primarily on the operations side, my projects included:

  • Liquidating an insurance company

  • A $300 million real estate development project

  • Managing environmental remediation and litigation.

I went on to become CFO of a small oil-field services conglomerate before buying a controlling interest in an oil field technology company.

The second half of my career has been focused on startups and small business. My particular interest has been how to use business to bless people and society, which led to me start Pillars of Light Consulting in 2017.

Family

I grew up in Calgary, Canada (where I learned French) but now live in Rabat, Morocco with my wife and four children.

Faith

I went to church as a child but grew up hostile to God because I didn't understand Him at all. I don't remember hearing the Gospel until I was 26 years old, at which time I accepted Jesus as my Lord and Savior.

I remained immature in my faith for several years, however, because I never studied my bible and was not part of a solid church.  Then, when I was 28, I went through a very difficult season of life during which I lost my job, my church disintegrated, and my first son was born very ill. Only when I reached the end of myself and my ability to cope with so much adversity did I finally turn to Christ and confess, “I need you.” Since that time my  relationship with and dependence on the Lord has grown tremendously, as has my theology.

I eventually learned that God is not meant to only be worshiped in church on Sundays. Rather we are to worship him with our lives and our passions. God is the one that gave me a passion for business, so by doing business in a way that honors Christ I seek to give Him the glory in all that I do.
